Without a job, not sure where I'm going, and thrilled to be finished with a graduate degree in biochemistry is what I am right now. Sure, I don't have a job, but I have a dream. I'm not going to say what that dream is right now, in case it doesn't work out and then you will know I'm a failure. My plan: go with the flow. If I don't happen to achieve my dream: find a job, work hard, be good.
Studying biochemistry at an undisclosed institution of higher learning was a great experience. You usually get what you put into it, so I put in everything and I got a lot back. I wouldn't do it again, but I recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what he or she is doing with his or her life. Say, maybe I should do it again.
The most important thing I learned about biochemistry is there is too much for one person to know. You can sit and read journal articles all day about proteins and nuclear translation and riboswitches and you'll just get hungry. Then you'll feel like going bowling. And when all is said and done, you will still fall behind. So, to all you prospective biochemists out there, just focus your studies on something that interests you. Design hypothesis-based experiments that will have value no matter the outcome. Go bowling during the day and study more at night, because bowling is cheaper before 4PM.
